Statement: Trump Abdicates Leadership, Congress Must Act to Protect DACAmented

The following is a statement by Michelle Tremillo, executive director of the Texas Organizing Project, on the Trump Administration’s decision to end the DACA program:

“Today, President Trump demonstrated that he doesn’t have the big heart nor the very good brain that he has bragged about because his decision to end DACA is heartless and doesn’t make sense in any way. Not only does DACA benefit its recipients by allowing them to work and join the American pursuit of happiness freely, but their contributions strengthen our economy and lives.

“What President Trump did demonstrate today is that he bends to the will of white supremacists who see the successful DACA program as a direct threat because nearly every beneficiary is a person of color. It’s a shame that Trump didn’t turn out to be the negotiator he sold himself to be and was unable to stand up to Texas Attorney General Dan Paxton’s threat to sue.

“Now, it falls on Congress to save us from Trump’s failed leadership. It has been comforting to hear senators like Lindsey Graham and representatives like Speaker Paul Ryan speak passionately about defending dreamers. But words are not enough. We expect them to promptly pass a law that gives dreamers a path to citizenship and doesn’t use their lives to try to gain policies that will leave even more families exposed to detention and deportation.

“We will continue fighting to protect our DACA neighbors and their families. All of our families deserve to have their humanity and dignity acknowledged and respected.”
