Today, TOP members who live in Houston’s District B applauded the decision by the First Court of Appeals to let the runoff go to the voters with the top two finishers from November’s election.
“This runoff election should’ve happened in December,” said Rosie McCutcheon, a resident of District B and a TOP leader. “It’s a shame that my community wasn’t able to choose the person to represent us in deciding the latest budget or fight for us on the COVID response.”
District B residents now urge Mayor Turner to get the race on the ballot as soon as possible by calling a special election.
“Every day the city is making decisions that impact my neighborhood,” said Angela Johnson, also a District B resident and TOP leader who launched a petition asking the city to move forward quickly with the election. “Right now, they’re deciding on the terms of the next police contract and how much assistance will be given to families devastated by the pandemic. I want to vote on who that person should be.”
TOP members also applauded the decision because it affirmed that people with felony convictions can run for elected office.
TOP members endorsed Tarsha Jackson, the top vote-getter and TOP’s former criminal justice campaign director, and look forward to helping her win.
