Texas Leads Nation in Voting

Today, it was reported that Texas leads the nation in early voting turnout with more than four million votes already counted. The following is a statement by Brianna Brown, deputy director of the Texas Organizing Project:

“Texans are voting in record numbers because they want change, and because of the work done by organizations like TOP that over the past decade have engaged people of color and young people to grow the electorate. Voters are not being deterred by the numerous attempts by Gov. Abbott, President Trump and other Republican leaders to suppress their votes.

TOP’s PAC is hard at work engaging 1.4 million infrequent and new voters of color on the phones, on social media, through texts and at the doors. We’re the only organization in Texas engaging voters in person, following strict health and safety guidelines. Our goal is to deliver more than 300,000 voters to help win Texas for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Then, we keep going, continuing to grow the electorate, continuing to hold officials accountable, continuing to push for policies that improve the lives of our communities.

“TOP has also helped elect officials who have made voting more accessible, most notably Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo. This 2020 election is our working theory in action – grow the electorate, help elect community champions, hold them accountable, and win policy changes that improve the lives of Black and Latino communities.

“Winning an election is not the goal. Transformational change is. Elections help us get there.”
