TOP: “Abbott is despicably scoring political points off the plight of unaccompanied minors”

The following is a statement from Jessica Azua, Immigration Justice Director of Texas Organizing Project (TOP), in reaction to Gov. Greg Abbott’s remarks today in Dallas politicizing and diminishing the humanity of unaccompanied minors:

“To further deflect from his recent failures, notably his lack of leadership during Winter Storm Uri, Governor Abbott is despicably scoring political points off the plight of unaccompanied minors simply seeking refuge. Instead of offering proactive, holistic solutions, Abbott continues gaslighting Texans and our country.

His antics fit a predictable, disturbing pattern of Texas Republicans scapegoating immigrants to sow fear, spread disinformation, and divide us. Any chance they get, they exploit the suffering of vulnerable communities of color for political gain and demonize us further.

“To address this moment in the most humane way possible, we need ample funding and resources from our  federal government, including more social workers, trauma specialists, medical professionals, and human rights specialists who can provide direct, needed assistance — NOT more militarization along our southern border.”
