TOP Will Continue To Fight Voter Suppression From Abbott & Far-Right Republicans
Texas Organizing Project (TOP), working in coalition this legislative session with voters, activists, civil rights groups, and community leaders to fend off anti-voter bills, commends Texas House Democrats for their bold eleventh-hour move to defeat voter suppression bill SB 7, and remains steadfast in its commitment to protect voting rights across the state.
“There are really distinct sides,” said Brianna Brown, TOP Deputy Director, in an interview this morning on CNN’s New Day. “One side is about shrinking the electorate, that is what the right-wing is doing across this country, and our side is about expanding the electorate and making sure our democracy is healthiest with maximum participation at the ballot box.”
If signed into law, SB 7 would have restricted Texans’ voting access, while codifying intimidation of and discrimination against Black and Latino voters, ushering in a new era of Jim and Jane Crow. With this priority legislation of his toppled, Gov. Greg Abbott wasted no time in announcing that voting restriction proposals will be brought forth again before legislators in a special session.
“Voter suppression is a threat to democracy itself, and we thank Texas House Democrats for using all the tools at their disposal to kill this disgraceful bill,” said Eric Mata, TOP Board President. “We know this is far from over, but we are ready to once again give it our all with progressive allies to ensure every voter has the ability to cast their ballot freely and have their voice heard in the democratic process, getting us closer to a #Texas4All.”
