Texas Organizing Project statement on Gov. Abbott’s border wall scheme

The following statement is from Jessica Azua, Immigration Justice Director of Texas Organizing Project (TOP), in reaction to Gov. Greg Abbott’s announcement today on the State of Texas building a wall along its southern border:

“As our state’s power grid hangs on by a thread, Gov. Abbott’s announcement today makes clear that he’s far more focused on making inroads with right-wing hardliners than keeping the lights on for millions of working-class Texans.

“His border wall scheme is an absurd, unprecedented power grab intended to appease the far-right fringe, those who see non-white immigrants as inherently dangerous and a threat to their existence.

“As he and his Republican cohorts do time and time again, Abbott is scapegoating immigrants to sow fear, spread disinformation, and divide us. Any chance he gets, he exploits the suffering of vulnerable communities of color for personal political gain to dehumanize us further.

“Abbott’s border wall is nothing more than a ridiculous Texas taxpayer-funded waste that will lead to more dangerous militarization along our border.”
