TOP and elected leaders team up for town hall centered on defending Black and Latino Texans’ rights

Texas Organizing Project (TOP) hosted a “Fight For Our Rights” town hall Friday night at the S.H.A.P.E. Community Center in Houston focused on defending against and countering attacks from right-wing politicians on the fundamental rights of Black and Latino Texans.

Guest speakers for the event included Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, State Representative Penny Morales, and Harris County Judge Christian Menefee.

Judge Hidalgo attended the town hall to discuss voting rights and other critical issues affecting Black and Latino communities. She also highlighted the need to address the gun violence epidemic and for policies and programs that enhance economic opportunity for everyone in Harris County and the state.

“Our rights and personal freedoms are being chipped away like never before, and it’s through organizing and mobilizing that we fight back,” said Oscar Thomas, a TOP leader in Houston. “A better, more humane Texas is within our reach, but only if we continue to have meaningful conversations with those around us about the change they would like to see in our state and inspire them to take action.”
