New Georgia Project Action Fund to win big for our democracy

With control of the U.S. Senate and state of our democracy hanging in the balance, all eyes will be on Georgia this Tuesday, January 5.

As Trump and his far-right minions like Ted Cruz continue with their deranged and vile mission of trying to steal the election, the outcome of Tuesday’s runoff election has never been more important.

VOLUNTEER with TOP and New Georgia Project Action Fund to call Georgia voters and urge them to cast their ballot for Senate candidates Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff.

A Warnock and Ossoff win has the power to end Mitch McConnell’s stranglehold of the Senate, paving the way for more much-needed pandemic relief, as well as other legislation that will benefit our communities.

For more information on volunteering, call or text Tempestt McHenry at (214) 704-8114.

Access to housing is a human right

No one should be facing eviction in the middle of a pandemic. Housing is a human right. While the latest Congressional stimulus bill extends the national eviction ban through January 31, we can’t just keep kicking the can down the road. We need our local leaders to step up and provide real housing protections and assistance for tenants!

Since March, even with the CDC eviction moratorium in place, there have been at least 18,000 evictions filed in the City of Houston. The CDC moratorium failed to protect the majority of these residents. How many more will be thrown into the streets until significant action is taken?

Houston renters must come together and demand the swift, bold relief we need. We believe all deserve an affordable and safe place to call home.

Pouring on our postcards for Medicaid expansion in Texas

Thanks to our friends at #SickOfItTX, we are out of postcards demanding Medicaid expansion in Texas… all 9,000 of them! You answered the call, joined our postcard parties or hosted your own, and wrote dozens of messages to state leaders by hand. A big, big thank you – we really couldn’t have done this without all of you!

If you have any remaining postcards, fill them out and send them by January 5. The Texas Legislature convenes January 12. You can find sample messages here.

If you weren’t able to get our postcards, or if you want to write and send more, you can use this toolkit to create your own! All you have to do is print the postcards, write your message, and mail them to your Texas House and Texas Senate representatives.

Taking our Right2Justice community member bailouts in 2021

Members of our communities deserve better than having to sit in jail simply because they cannot afford to post bond. The cash bail system disproportionately keeps Black and Latino people behind bars, taking a devastating toll on our families and neighborhoods year after year.

Since the start of the pandemic, TOP has bailed out 288 people from Texas jails. Here are the numbers.

When we free our people, our communities flourish. Expect our bailouts to continue in 2021!
