TOP supports San Antonio City Council’s budget proposal for increased apartment code enforcement

The following statement is from Sylvia Flores, a Texas Organizing Project (TOP) member in San Antonio and tenant of Seven Oaks Apartments, in response to San Antonio City Council including a proposal to create a code enforcement apartment inspection team in the city’s budget being passed today:

“The hard work and on-the-ground organizing of San Antonio tenants is the reason why an increase in apartment code enforcement is even being discussed today in the first place.

“As a current resident of Seven Oaks Apartments, a complex that has had multiple code violations in the last few months alone, this call for more code enforcement officers to work on apartment property maintenance inspections is long overdue and a definite step in the right direction.

“As community groups like TOP continue to shine a light on the substandard housing conditions thousands of San Antonio tenants are currently living in, our mayor and city council need to build on today’s progress by passing long term policy solutions. This is the only way to ensure that more San Antonians have a clean, safe, and affordable place to call home, and that abusive landlords are being held accountable. Our local elected leaders can’t just call it a day on this critical issue.

“Housing is a human right, and each and every resident of our city — regardless of their age, race, gender, or economic status — deserves a sanitary and secure place to live. We need those who represent us at City Hall to work toward adopting policies that get us closer to making this a reality for all San Antonians.”

Texas Organizing Project celebrates Labor Day

The following is a statement from Brianna Brown, Co-Executive Director of the Texas Organizing Project (TOP), on the organization’s observance of Labor Day this year:

“Now celebrating our second Labor Day as a unionized workplace – the first of which with a ratified collective bargaining agreement – TOP is proud to stand on the shoulders of generations of Black and Latino labor and civil rights leaders as we continue to build toward being the most equitable and supportive workplace we can be.

“Living through this pandemic has shown us firsthand how the future prosperity of our nation hinges on workers’ rights. While corporate forces work around the clock to diminish our inherent worth and the collective power of our labor, TOP continues to be a vocal proponent with our labor allies for raising the minimum wage to a living wage, and ensuring Texans have access to the paid sick leave they deserve.

No work is insignificant. All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence, said Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., words that ring as true as ever and are reflected in our organization’s values.

Eric Mata, TOP Board President, added:

“No matter our age, race, or background, all Texans deserve access to good-paying stable jobs with benefits that allow all to grow and thrive. Workers’ rights are human rights – and the recent unionization boom being seen across our country further affirms this.

“This Labor Day, I am particularly proud to see TOP as now officially part of the labor movement in an exciting new way, and through a resurgence of organizing, I am optimistic about what the future holds for workers nationwide.”

TOP on migrant deaths: “It’s an injustice, and a searing indictment of our discriminatory immigration system”

The following statement is from Jessica Azua, Immigration Justice Director with Texas Organizing Project (TOP) in response to the death of 53 migrants found in a sweltering, abandoned semi-truck trailer Monday:

“Immense sadness and frustration do not even begin to describe how I am feeling in reaction to this tragedy. In that semi-truck trailer were fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters – all with hopes and dreams.

“State and federal lawmakers can point fingers all they want, but the truth is this: Decades of failed, inhumane immigration policies – from Title 42 to Gov. Abbott’s Operation Lone Star – contributed to what is now being recognized as our country’s deadliest human smuggling incident on record.

“It is these policies, classist and rooted in white supremacy, that radically restrict entry to this country, forcing migrants faced with desperation to take dangerous paths to come to the U.S., all in search of safety and a better life.

“At the absolute least, the Biden administration must grant humanitarian parole for the victims’ families, and provide survivors of this traumatizing event with T visas.

“What occurred is not just a horrifying mass death. It’s an injustice, and a searing indictment of our discriminatory immigration system.”

TOP statement on Supreme Court striking down right to safe and legal abortion

The following statement is from Brianna Brown, Texas Organizing Project (TOP) Co-Executive Director, in response to the Supreme Court ruling overturning the landmark case and legal precedent of Roe v. Wade:

“Today, our nation’s right-wing political machine, fueled by lies and a desire to continue the sinister, violent legacy of white supremacy, stripped Americans of their fundamental right to safe and legal abortion – a ruthless crusade nearly 50 years in the making.

“Words alone cannot fully convey the atrociousness of this partisan opinion, the ways in which it jeopardizes countless other inherent personal freedoms, and the level of harm it will inflict on our nation’s marginalized communities – notably Black and Latino.

“This methodical undermining of our fundamental rights is par for the course for this Supreme Court. It is this right-wing court that has shattered protections in the Voting Rights Act and has now gutted rights established by Miranda v. Arizona.

“It is no coincidence whatsoever that right-wing extremists are hell-bent on banning us from making decisions for ourselves, literally not allowing us as human beings to have the power to determine our own futures. The fight for healthcare broadly, and abortion access specifically, IS a fight for racial justice.

“In his absurd majority draft opinion drenched in cynicism, Justice Alito states “Women are not without electoral or political power” – a twisted and insulting invitation for us to re-secure these human rights ourselves at the state legislative level, since our reactionary-ruled Supreme Court will not recognize them.

“We fully intend to turn Alito’s backhanded dare on its head, and fight tooth and nail with allies for however long is necessary to ensure that all – no matter our race, income level, or ZIP Code – have access to the abortion care we all deserve.

“We will leave no stone unturned in using this dare as a catalyst for bold, people-powered transformation. Our presence will be felt in the streets, and our rage will be channeled at the ballot box as we will stop at nothing to win, because future generations deserve so much more than regressive policies holding us back from living the full, happy lives we all have a right to live.”

Securing a Houston housing justice organizing win

ORGANIZING WIN: On June 1, 2022, TOP’s Harris County Housing Justice campaign members were pleased to see included in next year’s Houston city budget the funding for salaries for eight habitability/health inspectors in the first year of the Apartment Inspection Reform program — an initiative of Houston City Council Member Letitia Plummer (At-Large, Position 4).

TOP Houston members testified in support of this passed budget amendment which will increase accountability for landlords to provide livable housing for ALL Houston tenants.

Our Harris County Housing Justice campaign believes housing is a fundamental human right. Every Houstonian deserves to live in a home that is clean, safe, and inhabitable. We are proud that this passed budget amendment will ultimately improve housing conditions for many more Houston tenants in the coming months.

Winning Enhanced Library Cards for Harris County

An ID for the people, by the people

It’s official. After months of organizing with Houston Leads partners, Harris County will now offer residents new enhanced library cards! TOP and allies held a press conference Tuesday, April 5, 2022 celebrating the launch of this new enhanced library card program. Not having a form of photo ID presents challenges for vulnerable communities across Harris County, especially for those who are experiencing homelessness, the formerly incarcerated, domestic abuse survivors who have lost their documentation, and those without the ability to access a state ID.

This is a TOP home-grown campaign win, started by TOP immigration justice campaign members who identified this ID as an opportunity to fill a community need.

The enhanced library cards will include a photo, name, date of birth, and address for the recipient, providing Harris County residents who lack access to a form of identification with a basic form of alternative, non-traditional photo ID. Learn more about the new cards here.

TOP PAC Advances Bold, Progressive Vision for Texas in 2022 Primary

TOP PAC Reached Over 260,000 TX Voters

The following statement is from Michelle Tremillo, Co-Executive Director of the Texas Organizing Project (TOP), in response to the group’s efforts in the 2022 Texas Democratic Primary:

“At the end of 2021, Texas Organizing Project (TOP) PAC launched an intensive candidate screening process aimed at endorsing primary candidates who are unapologetic in their commitment to justice and transforming our state into one where Black and Latino Texans can thrive. The result was a slate of 22 endorsed leaders ready to champion progressive policies to uplift our communities.

“Over the past four weeks, our get-out-the-vote program outreached through canvassing, texting, phone-banking, and mailers to over 260,000 Texans, not only about our endorsed candidates, but on issues that impact their daily lives.

“Connecting these issues to the ballot box, and subsequently the elected officeholders who address these issues, is where our voter engagement work proves to be vital. It’s an essential part of our goal to bring to life a true Texas for all.”

Ray Brackens, Harris County TOP board member, added:

“We know there is no pathway to build progressive power in our state — to truly make a Texas that works for everyone — without meaningful and sustained voter engagement in Black and Latino communities.”

“Each and every election cycle, we are building the progressive infrastructure we need in our communities to connect with these voters and organize around their issues. This is how we shift the political landscape in our state, and how we put more power into the hands of Black and Latino Texans.”

TOP PAC congratulates the following endorsed candidates in advancing or winning their Democratic primary races, as of this afternoon:

  • Jessica Cisneros (Congress, TX-28)
  • Jasmine Crockett (Congress, TX-30)
  • Greg Casar (Congress, TX-35)
  • Lina Hidalgo (Harris County Judge)
  • Adrian Garcia (Harris County Commissioner, Pct. 2)
  • Ben Chou (Harris County Commissioner, Pct. 4)
  • Ron Reynolds (Texas House, Dist. 27)
  • Alma Allen (Texas House, Dist. 131)
  • Jon Rosenthal (Texas House, Dist. 135)

TOP: “President Biden must now follow through on his campaign pledge to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court”

The following statement is from Brianna Brown, Co-Executive Director of the Texas Organizing Project (TOP), in reaction to news yesterday that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer will soon retire:

“We applaud Justice Breyer’s decision to retire after dutifully serving on our nation’s highest court for nearly 30 years. President Biden must now follow through on his campaign pledge to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court.

“With no shortage of highly-qualified and principled women to choose from, this nominee must recognize the urgency of the moment to protect our democracy as well as the fundamental rights of all who call this country home.

“We expect nothing less than a swift and professional confirmation process from Majority Leader Schumer and Senate Democrats. Failure is not an option. It is far past time that a Black woman be seated behind the Supreme Court dais.

TOP PAC Endorses Jessica Cisneros (TX-28) For Congress

Cisneros has proven herself a fighter for Black and Latino Texans

Texas Organizing Project (TOP) PAC is proud to announce the endorsement of Jessica Cisneros in Texas Congressional District 28. A product of South Texas, Cisneros is a fierce believer in the power of community, and as an immigration and human rights attorney, she has shown her commitment to fighting for and improving outcomes for working-class families like her own.

Her campaign is rooted in progressive values ― the belief that all who call this country home should have access to quality health care, good-paying jobs, decent affordable housing, thriving schools, a clean environment, and economic opportunity. She understands the drivers of injustice in our nation, and is equipped with the knowledge and conviction to deliver meaningful change in CD-28.

“Electing Jessica is about making clear that our communities deserve better, that we deserve forward-thinking leadership that centers working-class Black and Latino Texans who historically have had their needs neglected by lawmakers across our state,” said Michelle Tremillo, Co-Executive Director of TOP. “Jessica is the candidate in this race who will exhibit this leadership and proudly advocate for her constituents – not for big corporations and special interests.”

Cisneros is challenging Congressman Henry Cuellar, a politician who has raked in donations from corporate PACs, private detention facilities, and the NRA since he took office in 2005. On Wednesday, the FBI conducted a court-authorized search of Cuellar’s Laredo home.

“It’s time CD-28 had a real fighter for the people representing it, not a power-hungry politician who upholds the status quo,” said Dr. Doshie Piper, a TOP board member in San Antonio. “Henry Cuellar doesn’t stand for progress, he stands for more of the same. Jessica Cisneros is a leader who will listen to and be a bold champion for our underserved communities, and TOP is proud to support her.”

TOP: “Honoring the legacy of Dr. King means enshrining the expansion of voting rights”

The following statement is from Michelle Tremillo, Co-Executive Director of the Texas Organizing Project (TOP), in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year:

“Today, we echo the piercing and principled words of the King family, “No celebration without legislation.”

“Honoring the legacy of Dr. King means enshrining the expansion of voting rights he and other civil rights leaders so courageously championed and put their lives on the line for.

“At a time when access to the ballot box, a cornerstone of our nation’s democracy, is being systematically attacked by right-wing politicians, the need for our Democratic-controlled Senate to bypass the archaic filibuster to codify voting rights protections has never been greater.

“Surrender from Senate Democrats on this issue would be a slap in the face to the millions of Black and Latino voters across the country whose rights are being threatened, as well as an insult to the memory of Dr. King himself.”

TOP board member Ray Brackens of Houston added:

“Throughout the day today, our social media feeds will be flooded with quotes from the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – a share disgustingly coming from the same Republican leaders who support and have passed discriminatory voting restrictions.

“Just as we are sick and tired of these officials whitewashing the words of a justice-fighting icon, we are fed up with congressional inaction on comprehensive voting rights legislation.

“Each day that passes that Senators Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema prioritize preserving old legislative procedure over protecting the fundamental right to vote is a win for far-right extremists and a slight to what Dr. King selflessly fought for.

“Enough with the stalling and lip service. Democrats must deliver on voting rights now by passing the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act.”
